Beckham v Burrell in Book of the Year
Soccer icon David Beckham is matched against Diana's former butler, Paul Burrell, in the short-list for the coveted Book of the Year category at this year's British Book Awards.
The Book of the Year winner won't be based on sales alone, and the duo will be facing stiff competition from J.K Rowling whose Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, became the fastest selling book of all time when it was published in June last year, selling 1,777,541 copies in its first day.
Booker nominee Monica Ali is also in the running with her debut novel Brick Lane, as is Whitbread winner Mark Haddon, with his first novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Other titles shortlisted for the prestigious Book Of the Year Award are Lynne Truss' surprise Christmas hit Eats, Shoots and Leaves; The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold; and Alexander McCall Smith's hugely popular The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency.
This year's awards sees the introduction of the new Literary Fiction Award, where Monica Ali, who is shortlisted for four 'Nibbies' in all and Mark Haddon who is up for a record five awards meet again, alongside Booker shortlisted Notes on a Scandal by Zoe Heller, Jonathan Raban's Waxwings, Siri Hustvedt's What I Loved and Martin Amis's critically damned Yellow Dog.
Also in the evenings line-up is the announcement of the winner of the much-hyped Richard & Judy Best Read of the Year. In the ten weeks preceding the awards each of the ten short-listed books have been discussed in the Book Club feature of the Channel 4 show, and so far the majority have shot into the bestseller lists as a result. The TV duo will host the evening in addition to presenting the 'Best Read' prize.
The 15th Annual British Book Awards will take place on the 7th April and will be televised by Channel 4 on Good Friday, the 9th April between 5-6pm to what is expected to be the biggest audience ever to watch a book programme.
