Northern Ireland's Bryce, Longley on Eliot shortlist

Colette Bryce
Northern Irish poets Colette Bryce and Michael Longley are included in the shortlist for this year's TS Eliot Prize.

The annual prize of 10,000 is awarded to the writer of the best new collection of poetry published in 2004.

Bryce's The Full Indian Rope Trick and Longley's Snow Water have been shortlisted alongside eight other poets including Tom Paulin (The Road to Inver), Ruth Padel (The Soho Leopard) and John Hartley Williams (Blues). The judges - Douglas Dunn (Chair), Paul Farley and Carol Rumens - will make their final decision on Monday 17 January 2005, when the prize will be presented by Valerie Eliot at a ceremony in London.

The TS Eliot Prize was inaugurated in 1993 to celebrate the Poetry Book Society's 40th birthday and honour its founding poet.

Previous winners are Ciaran Carson, Paul Muldoon, Mark Doty, Les Murray, Don Paterson, Ted Hughes, Hugo Williams, Michael Longley, Anne Carson, Alice Oswald and Don Paterson.
