Frank Cottrell Boyce, Meg Rosoff, Anne Turnbull and Leslie Wilson have made it on to the shortlist for the 2004 Guardian Children's Fiction Prize.
Their novels were chosen from a longlist of eight books and the overall winner will be announced on 9 October.
Frank Cottrell Boyce's 'Millions', 'How I Live Now' by Meg Rosoff, 'No Shame, No Fear' by Anne Turnbull and Leslie Wilson's 'Last Train from Kummersdorf' were selected by a panel of their peers.
This year's judges are Mark Haddon, who won the award last year with his crossover success 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time', prolific author Adèle Geras and award-winning writer Marcus Sedgwick. The panel is chaired by Julia Eccleshare.
Past winners of the Children's Fiction Prize include Ted Hughes, Anne Fine, Philip Pullman and Jacqueline Wilson.
