08/04/2004 Beckham winner of British Book Award
David Beckham was honoured by the British Book Awards last night for his book, 'My Side', which has become the fastest-selling autobiography of all time.
Co-written by Tom Watt, it sold 103,000 copies in its first week of publication and has now sold over one million copies.
It had been nominated for the prestigious Book of the Year award but instead took a specially created one-off award for The Fastest Selling Biography of All Time.
Beckham, who is currently on holiday in Switzerland with his family amidst allegations that he had an affair with a former PA, accepted the honour via pre-recorded video.
In a statement on Wednesday he said: "When I decided to write my autobiography I never expected to be breaking records. I just wanted to give my side of the story."
Lynne Truss' book on grammar and punctuation 'Eat, Shoots and Leaves' took the Book of the Year award.
Alexander McCall Smith, writer of the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, was named author of the year.
