08/07/2004 Radio drama award winners announced
The winners of the 22nd RTÉ PJ O'Connor Radio Drama Awards were announced yesterday evening at a ceremony in the RTÉ Radio Centre with actress and best-selling author Pauline McLynn presenting the prizes.
The winner of the first prize of €3,000 was Michael D O'Callaghan for his play 'Downwards', described by the judges as an exciting, skilfully rendered account of a caving expedition in the West of Ireland gone wrong.
The second prize (€2,000) was awarded to Catherine Kelly for 'Iona', which is set in a small town in Northern Ireland in the wake of the cease-fires and the Belfast agreement.
'After The Beep', a highly inventive comic romp set in a house full of noise-making machines, won third prize of €1,000 for Jaimie Carswell.
Over 150 plays from writers all over Ireland and overseas were entered into this year's competition.
