08/09/2004 Fiction, fact, poetry on First Book longlist
Nine books have made it to the longlist of the Guardian First Book Award, which includes fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
The prestigious 10,000 annual award, which was launched in 1999, is intended to recognise and reward writing by first-time authors across fiction and non-fiction.
This year over 145 books were submitted by publishers and the longlist is made up of five British authors, two American, one Dutch, and one Canadian of Latvian origin.
Previous winners include Zadie Smith's White Teeth and Jonathan Safran Foer's novel Everything is Illuminated.
The shortlist will be announced in early November, and the overall winner of the prize in December.
