08/09/2004 Jake Gyllenhaal for Gulf War movie
'Donnie Darko' star Jake Gyllenhaal is to play the lead role in the big screen adaptation of Anthony Swofford's acclaimed Gulf War memoir 'Jarhead'.
Production Weekly reports that Gyllenhaal has been cast opposite Jamie Foxx in the film, with 'American Beauty' director Sam Mendes behind the lens.
The film is due to begin shooting in California and New Mexico in December.
With his father, grandfather and older brother having served in the US Marines, Swofford enlisted at the age of 18 in 1988 and following the first Gulf War, attended the University of California and the Iowa Writers' Workshop.
'Jarhead', a term used to describe Marines, is Swofford's first book.
Gyllenhaal can currently be seen in the director's cut of 'Donnie Darko' at the Irish Film Institute.
Foxx's new movie, the Tom Cruise thriller 'Collateral', opens in Irish cinemas next week.
