Author of bestseller McCarthy's Bar dies

McCarthy's Bar
Travel writer and broadcaster Pete McCarthy has died of cancer aged 51.

McCarthy's first book, the entertaining and hilarious McCarthy's Bar, saw him travelling around Ireland and never passing up the opportunity of having a drink in a bar that shared his name

After the success of that publication he undertook an epic pilgrimage to four continents in pursuit of far-flung Irish connections which he documented in his second book, The Road to McCarthy.

A regular on the comedy circuit with the poet Roger McGough, McCarthy also compered at the Comedy Store and wrote television scripts for Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones.

He was married and had three children.
