09/06/2004 Davy Byrne's Writing Awards announced
The winners of the Davy Byrne's Writing Awards were announced last night in Dublin, with Anne Enright taking the overall honours with her short story 'Honey'.
Dublin born writer Enright was awarded a cheque for €20,000 after receiving the Best Short Story Award at the ceremony.
Enright has previously enjoyed much success as a writer, receiving the Rooney Prize and the Royal Society of Authors Encore Prize, as well as being shortlisted for The Irish Times/Aer Lingus Irish Literature Prize.
Five runners-up in the Davy Byrne's Writing Awards each received €1,000 for their efforts. Awarded as runners-up were Kevin Barry for 'See The Tree How Big It's Grown', Linda Dennard for 'The door and the window', Philip O'Ceallaigh for 'My life as an artist', Breda W. Ryan for 'The Hardest Winter' and Michael West for 'How Ferenca Renyi Keep Silent'.
This year's judges in the Davy Byrne's Writing Awards were Tobias Wolff (USA), A.L. Kennedy (Scotland) and Caroline Walsh (Irish Times Literary Editor).
