British author Levy wins Orange Prize

Andrea Levy
Andrea Levy won the 2004 Orange Prize for Fiction last night for her novel 'Small Island'.

Her fourth book, 'Small Island' is about a Jamaican couple who travel to Britain to begin a new life after World War II.

The prestigious Orange Prize for Fiction, which is worth £30,000, is awarded annually to women writers.

Levy beat a shortlist that included Margaret Atwood - in her third time being nominated - Shirley Hazzard, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Gillian Slovo and Rose Tremain.

Levy was born in England to Jamaican parents and is the author of 'Every Light in the House Burnin', 'Never Far from Nowhere' and 'Fruit of the Lemon'.
