14/10/2004 Edinburgh to become City of Literature
Unesco, the United Nations' cultural body, is to name Edinburgh as the world's first City of Literature.
The Scottish Culture Minister, Patricia Ferguson, who led the successful 20-strong Scottish delegation, said it was great news for Edinburgh and Scotland.
A decision was reached within hours of the ambitious bid being formally submitted to UN chiefs in Paris.
Writers, including JK Rowling, Muriel Spark and Ian Rankin, had backed the campaign.
The campaign team said the city could point to literary greats including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and Robert Burns, who all lived and wrote in Edinburgh.
It is thought that Edinburgh will officially receive its title in April 2005.
