15/03/2004 Orange longlist announced
This year's longlist for the Orange prize for fiction, awarded annually to a novel by a woman published in the UK, combines new and established writers.
There are seven first novels on the 20-strong list: by familiar names such as Monica Ali, for her East End novel Brick Lane, and Audrey Niffenegger, for her surprise US bestseller The Time Traveler's Wife; as well as less well known new writers like the Nigerian Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and India's Rupa Bajwa.
The list also includes six authors who have been longlisted before: Margaret Atwood, Stevie Davies, Toni Morrison, Anne Tyler, Maggie Gee and Andrea Levy. Gee and Levy have garnered particular critical acclaim for their novels, The Flood and Small Island.
The judges for this year's prize are Sandi Toksvig, broadcaster and author; Karen Cunningham, Glasgow head of libraries; Helena Kennedy, QC; Katharine Viner, editor of Guardian Weekend; and crime novelist Minette Walters.
The shortlist will be announced on April 27, with the awards ceremony scheduled for June 8. The winner will receive a cheque for Ł30,000. Last year's winner was the American Valerie Martin for Property; previous winners have included Carol Shields, Linda Grant and Helen Dunmore.
Orange has also announced an additional award for new writers, to be inaugurated next year. Debut works of fiction by women, including short-story collections, published in the UK between April 1 2004 and March 31 2005 will be eligible to enter. The judging panel will be chaired by novelist Emily Perkins.
