Hugh Grant to be Whitbread judge

Hugh Grant
Actor Hugh Grant has been confirmed as the final judge on the judging panel for this year's Whitbread Book of the Year award.

The panel will be chaired by ITN newscaster, Trevor McDonald and will include journalist/broadcaster Mariella Frostrup, UK MP Michael Portillo and writer and former Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, Roy Hattersley.

The Whitbread Prize consists of five categories - novel, first novel, biography, poetry and children's books - with five winners of each individual category going head to head for the coveted Book of the Year award.

The five Book of the Year judges will make their decision along with the other four category judges consisting of writers Jenny Colgan (Novel), Kevin Crossley-Holland (Children's Book Award), Lavinia Greenlaw (Poetry) and Joanne Harris (First Novel).

Recent winners of the Whitbread Book of the Year include Claire Tomalin, Philip Pullman, Seamus Heaney and Ted Hughes. Last year the award went to Mark Haddon for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

The overall winner will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on January 25, 2005 and will receive stg £25,000.
