Conan Doyle archive likely to fetch £2m

Arthur Conan Doyle
A lost hoard of Arthur Conan Doyle material, including a scrap of a story he wrote at age six and the brass plate with which he set up as a young doctor, has turned up in the London office of a law firm.

The archive, which contains more than 3,000 items, including letters, notes, manuscripts and artefacts, disappeared more than 40 years ago during legal disputes over his estate. It will be sold at a Christie's auction in May, and estimated to fetch more than £2m. It includes a sketch for the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes in A Study in Scarlet - with the original title, A Tangled Skein, crossed out - estimated at up to £150,000. There is also a collection of notebooks and correspondence, including one exchange of mutual admiration between Conan Doyle and Oscar Wilde.
