18/05/2004 German Festival triumph for Irish plays
Two emerging Irish playwrights were presented with awards at the closing ceremony of the 2004 Heidelberg Theatre Festival in Germany on Sunday 16 May.
Derry-born Morna Regan was presented with the European Authors Award, worth €5,000, for her play 'Midden'.
The Audience Award went to Ursula Rani Sarma from County Clare for her play 'Blue'.
Theater Heidelberg will present 'Blue' as part of their next season.
Ireland was the invited guest country at this year's Festival and was also represented by Belfast-born Owen McCafferty with 'Scenes from the Big Picture'.
These three plays were given staged readings in translation together with six plays by emerging German and Austrian playwrights.
The Festival featured a full production of Gerald Murphy's 'Take me Away' by Rough Magic Theatre Company and Martin McDonagh's 'The Pillowman'.
Irish playwrights and theatre practitioners also participated in a roundtable discussion led by Fintan O'Toole on the state of contemporary Irish theatre.
