18/08/2004 Jordan to use Kilkenny church in film
The Catholic Diocese of Ossory has granted permission for the parish church in Callan, County Kilkenny to be used by Oscar-winning director Neil Jordan in a new Irish film.
The Church of the Immaculate Conception in the town, which is located ten miles from Kilkenny City, has been chosen by Jordan for his latest project, 'Breakfast on Pluto' which will begin shooting in three weeks time.
Controversy has arisen because the lead character in the film, based on the Booker-shortlisted novel by Patrick McCabe, is the result of an illicit affair by a parish priest and his housekeeper in the make believe town of Tyrellin.
Patrick 'Kitten' Brady, played by Cillian Murphy, leaves rural 1970s Ireland and reappears in London as a transvestite cabaret singer.
