18/10/2004 Zeta-Jones backs Thomas literary prize
Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones has thrown her support behind a literary contest to be launched in memory of her fellow countryman, Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.
Zeta-Jones is to act as international ambassador for the biennial competition with a prize of 60,000.
The Dylan Thomas Literary Prize will be open to creative writing in English by poets and authors aged under 30.
A high profile jury, including Independent editor in chief Simon Kelner, novelists Stevie Davies, Stephen Knight and Ben Marcus and poet Gwyneth Lewis, will examine the entries.
Cultural historian and broadcaster Professor Peter Stead came up with the idea for the prize.
"This is commemorating the fact that Dylan Thomas was essentially a young writer," he said. "Most of his poetry was written before the time he was 30."
