19/12/2004 Wolfe wins Bad Sex Award
American novelist Tom Wolfe has been declared overall winner of the Literary Review's Bad Sex Award.
The annual award is given to a writer for badly written or embarrassing account of sex in a book.
Wolfe, best known for his tome The Bonfire of the Vanities, turned down an invite to the presentation ceremony in London this week.
The dubious description comes from his latest book I Am Charlotte Simmons and the offending paragraph concerns a young woman losing her virginity.
The winning description?
"Slither slither slither slither went the tongue. But the hand, that was what she tried to concentrate on, the hand, since it has the entire terrain of her torso to explore and not just the otorhinolaryngological caverns - oh God, it was not just at the border where the flesh of the breast joins the pectoral sheath of the chest - no, the hand was cupping her entire right - Now!" from I Am Charlotte Simmons by Tom Wolfe.
