Hinton Writes First Novel in 16 Years

Best-selling author S.E. Hinton, who rose to literary stardom as a teenager with "The Outsiders," has written her first novel in 16 years, her publisher announced yesterday.

Hinton, who lives in Tulsa, America, has written "Hawkes Harbor," her first fiction aimed at adult readers after scoring successes with adolescent books like "Rumblefish," "That Was Then ... This Is Now," and "Tex."

Tor Books will publish "Hawkes Harbor" on September 15th. It's Hinton's first novel since "Taming the Star Runner" in 1988. She has since written two children's books.

"I was having a hard time figuring out what to write and I finally remembered one of the perks to writing is having adventures. So I set out to write an adventure story" said Hinton.

"Hawkes Harbor" tells the story of Jamie Summers, an orphan who goes out to sea and encounters pirates, sharks, smugglers and prisons before landing in the seaside town that provides the book's title.

Susan Eloise Hinton's books have sold more than 10 million copies beginning with the 1967 publication of "The Outsiders" when Hinton was 17. The best-selling young adult novel of all time has been banned in some schools but is taught in others.

Her books have inspired four films.
