21/10/2004 Bergman reveals family secret in memoir
Film director Ingmar Bergman has revealed that he has a secret love child from an affair conducted with a Swedish countess in the 1950s.
The revelation came in the 86-year-old's newly-published memoirs, which are called Tre Dagboecker (Three Diaries).
Bergman is the biological father of his late wife Ingrid Von Rosen's daughter, Maria. Bergman wed Von Rosen in 1971, 12 years after Maria was born - when Von Rosen was in another marriage.
The couple had led everyone to believe he was merely the girl's stepfather. Maria was only told the truth when she was 22.
Bergman decided to use his memoirs as a platform to set the record straight - and admit he's secretly fathered a love child for 45 years. Ingrid Von Rosen died of cancer in 1994.
The Swedish film director's career has spanned over six decades, in which he has won three Oscars for best foreign language film and nine nominations for best director.
He is considered as one of the world's greatest film-makers and an ongoing influence on modern directors.
