24/06/2004 Group celebrate rival Shakespeare
A literary group called the De Vere Society are celebrating the 400th anniversary of the death of Elizabethan nobleman Edward de Vere, who they claim is the 'real Shakespeare'.
The Society says de Vere, Earl of Oxford, who lived from 1550 to 1604, used 'William Shakespeare' as a pen name.
The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust described their claim as "nonsense"
This is not the first time that Shakespeare's plays have been claimed for other writers.
Other theories about have included claims they were written by playwright Francis Bacon and poet Christopher Marlowe.
