24/09/2004 Russell Crowe for John Hepworth adaptation
Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe may make his directorial debut next year in a film based on a novel by John Hepworth.
Set during World War II, The Long Green Shore is about an Australian battalion's mission in Papua New Guinea.
The soldiers arrive on the beaches of New Guinea with orders to beat back the retreating Japanese.
The men are greeted by the corpses of Americans and Japanese, remnants of earlier bloody warfare and a reminder of their dubious purpose there.
The book has been acclaimed as Australia's All Quiet on the Western Front.
Crowe may also star in the film, playing the battalion commander or the character who narrates the story.
