25/02/2004 Stamps mark Lord of the Rings 50th anniversary
The 50th anniversary of the publication of The Lord of the Rings is being marked with a special stamp issue by Royal Mail.
The stamps are based on JRR Tolkien's own illustrations and include Bag End, Fangorn Forest and the Forest of Lothlsrien, as well as a map of Middle Earth drawn by his son Christopher.
The first two parts of the book - The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers - were published in 1954, followed by The Return of the King in 1955.
Royal Mail's Mike Dalton said: "The images used on the stamps offer a rare glimpse of how the author himself imagined the places he created."
