27/04/2004 Atwood, Slovo on Orange shortlist
Margaret Atwood and Gillian Slovo are among the nominees on the shortlist
for this year's Orange literary prize.
Atwood was nominated for 'Oryx and Crake', which was also shortlisted for
last year's Man Booker prize, and Slovo for her tenth novel, 'Ice Road'.
The other nominees are a mixture of new and well-known authors - first time
Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie ('Purple Hibiscus'), Andrea Levy
('Small Island'), Australia's Shirley Hazzard ('The Great Fire') and Rose
Tremain ('The Colour').
Broadcaster Sandy Toksvig, Chair of Judges, said: "This year's Orange Prize
shortlist ranges from the fledgling author to the famous; the factually
based story to the fantastical; from the minutiae of the domestic to the
broad sweep of the political."
Established in 1996, the Orange Prize celebrates and promotes fiction by
women and is awarded for the best novel of the year written by a woman.
The winner, to be announced on 8 June, will be presented with a cheque for
£30,000 and a limited edition bronze statue.
