Maurice Shadbolt
Leading New Zealand author Maurice Shadbolt has died after a lengthy illness, aged 72.

The Auckland-born writer was best known for his award-winning novels and short stories.

Since 1959 he has written eleven novels, four collections of short stories, a volume of journalism, plays, a war history, and two autobiographical works.

Shadbolts' books include The New Zealanders, Among the Cinders and a book which has been acclaimed as the great New Zealand novel, Strangers and Journeys.

He also wrote a celebrated trilogy on the New Zealand Wars opened with the best-selling Season of the Jew (1986), followed by Monday's Warriors (1990) and the House of Strife (1993).
