27/10/2004 New Zealand writer Maurice Shadbolt dies
Leading New Zealand author Maurice Shadbolt has died after a lengthy illness, aged 72.
The Auckland-born writer was best known for his award-winning novels and short stories.
Since 1959 he has written eleven novels, four collections of short stories, a volume of journalism, plays, a war history, and two autobiographical works.
Shadbolts' books include The New Zealanders, Among the Cinders and a book which has been acclaimed as the great New Zealand novel, Strangers and Journeys.
He also wrote a celebrated trilogy on the New Zealand Wars opened with the best-selling Season of the Jew (1986), followed by Monday's Warriors (1990) and the House of Strife (1993).
Shadbolts' 40-year writing career was brought to a premature close by the encroachment of Alzheimer's disease.
He is survived by his fourth wife, writer Elspeth Sandys, five children from earlier marriages and six grandchildren.
