28/01/2004 Haddon takes Whitbread Book of the Year
Mark Haddon has won the Whitbread Book of the Year award for his book 'The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time'.
The story is told from the perspective of a 15-year-old with Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism, as he investigates the death of a neighbour's dog.
Joan Bakewell, the chair of the judging panel said the book was "quite exceptional in the way Haddon is able to express the voice of the child and to get into the boy's language. It is extraordinary because of the limitations he has put on himself. He reveals the boy as a thinking and tender person. We also thought it terribly funny. None of the judges has known anything like it".
'The Curious Incident...' has been issued in both adult and children's editions.
The Whitbread ceremony was held in London last night and an overall winner was chosen from the five category winners announced earlier this month.
