Susan Sontag dies at 71

Susan Sontag
The American writer, essayist and critical thinker Susan Sontag has died.

She was 71 and was being treated for leukaemia.

As well as her academic career, Sontag campaigned for women and human rights and wrote the historical bestsellers The Volcana Lover and In America, the later of which won the American National Book Award.

Sontag was best known as an essayist, writing on everything from popular culture to terrorism, politics to photography.
