30/01/2004 Caine and Mereilles Team Up for LeCarre's 'Gardener'
John LeCarre's (The Spy Who Came in From the Cold) newest novel The Constant Gardner, was to be directed by Mike Newell, but due to his "Harry Potter" commitments, the feature is now going to be directed by the highly acclaimed Fernando Mereilles best known for "City of God". The script, an adaptation of John Le Carre's The Constant Gardener will be delivered to Focus Features in time for a March shooting date.
"The Constant Gardener" tells the story of a British Diplomat, Justin Quayle in AIDS torn Kenya, to be played by Ralph Fiennes, who uncovers a conspiracy between the country's government and a major pharmaceutical company as they try to promote their "wonder cure" against turbeculosis. Justin Quayle's wife is murdered along with the man she is suspected of having an affair with. Jeffery Caine (Goldeneye) penned this screenplay.
The screenplay is being penned by action film writer Jeffrey Caine and will be Meirelles' first english feature and by the sound of it, it's bound to be a good one.
