Isabel Allende enlists in Greenpeace campaign
Chilean author Isabel Allende has joined up with Greenpeace in its drive to urge British publishers to use paper from sustainable sources.
Allende's Spanish publisher, Random House Mondadori, are printing an edition of her latest novel, Forest of the Pygmies, on 100% recycled paper.
Greenpeace now putting pressure on Allende's UK publisher, HarperCollins, to do the same.
Greenpeace claims that the virgin (non-recycled) wood pulp that HarperCollins currently uses endangers the survival of animals such as the European brown bear and flying squirrel.
"It is great that my Spanish book is on an ancient forest friendly paper and that, by doing so, I am playing a part in protecting the world's ancient forests," said Allende.
"I would like all my other publishers to follow the example set by my Spanish publisher, and use ancient forest friendly papers for my books."
This is the latest step in Greenpeace's Save or Delete campaign which has the backing of a number of high profile authors, including JK Rowling, Philip Pullman, Joanna Trollope, Helen Fielding and Ian Rankin.
