Eight books win better life awards
Ann Patchett was among the eight winners of a Books for a Better Life Award, announced last night.
The awards, founded in 1996, are sponsored by the National Multiple Scelerosis Society and are presented annually to self-improvement titles. Previous winners include Suze Orman, the Dalai Lama, Maria Shriver and Deborah Tannen.
Patchett won for Truth & Beauty: A Friendship, Neely Tucker was cited for Love in the Driest Season and Bill O'Hanlon for Thriving Through Crisis.
The other winners were Caroline Myss' Invisible Acts of Power, Souad's Burned Alive, Thomas Moore's Dark Nights of the Soul, Jerome Groopman's The Anatomy of Hope and Sam Swope's I Am a Pencil.
There also were two inductions into the Books for a Better Life Hall of Fame: Heidi Murkoff, co-author of the million-selling What to Expect Series, and former Bantam Books CEO Oscar Dystel, whose late son suffered from multiple sclerosis.
