01/08/2005 Roast Chicken and Other Stories wins top spot in poll
Simon Hopkinson and Lindsey Bareham's Roast Chicken and Other Stories has topped a poll of the most useful recipe books ever written.
The Top Ten list was compiled by Waitrose Food Illustrated Magazine and shows a refreshing lack of celebrity chefs.
The London chef (Hopkinson) and food writer (Bareham) published their book in 1994 and a panel of experts, including restaurateur Aldo Zilli and food writer Sophie Grigson, consider that its "diminutive size belies its incredible value".
Queen of no-nonsense cookery, Delia Smith, was in second place for her Complete Cookery Course, which was first published 27 years ago, but is regularly updated.
Nigel Slater's Real Fast Food reached third place, followed by The River Cottage Meat Book by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Claudia Roden's A New Book of Middle Eastern Food.
