Director announced for Shantaram adaptation

Shantaram
Australian Peter Weir has been named as the director of the film adaptation of Gregory David Roberts' autobiographical novel Shantaram.

Roberts, a heroin addict who was convicted of armed robbery, escaped from prison in Australia and fled to Bombay.

While there he set up a medical clinic for people living in the slums and was recruited by the Bombay underworld.

Roberts' travels also took him to Afghanistan, where he fought with the mujaheddin.

Johnny Depp is to star in the film and will also produce, in collaboration with Brad Pitt.

Production is due to begin on the film late in 2006.
