Ronan Bennett wins Irish Novel of the Year
Belfast born author Ronan Bennett won the Irish Novel of the Year award last night. His book Havoc in its Third Year is a political novel set in early seventeenth-century England about a woman accused of the murder of her baby.
Ronan Bennett beat off stiff competition from Colm Tóibín, Chrstine Dwyer Hickey and David Park to win the Hughes & Hughes Irish Novel of the Year title. He collected a specially commissioned trophy along with a prize of €10,000 from Ryan Tubridy in Dublin's Mansion House last night.
The judges, including Olive Braiden the chairperson of the Arts Council and Gillian Bowler of Failte Ireland said the book explored the effect of social and political conflict brilliantly.
