03/08/2005 Authors to receive library royalties
According to a report on RTÉ's Entertainment website, the government are to introduce a new scheme whereby authors will receive royalties for every time their books are taken out of public libraries.
Next year will see the introduction of this payments system, which will bring Ireland in line with a European directive.
The European Commission threatened legal action otherwise.
Presently authors only receive royalties when libraries buy their books but, in England, authors can receive library royalties of up to £6,000 every year.
The cost of paying the new royalties - which could be several million euro - will come from the Exchequer rather than from borrowers.
