The Good German
Stephanie Alexander's revised and updated Australian kitchen compendium, The Cook's Companion, was awarded gold in the Best Food Book category at the 2005 World Food Media Awards held in Adelaide last weekend.

It shared the honour with a United States publication, The Breath of a Wok, by Grace Young and Alan Richardson.

The food and drink equivalent of the Oscars, the biennial World Food Media Awards celebrated the work of recipients from around the world.

Gold Ladles were awarded to nominees from UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, and Canada.

Alastair Hendy, the British food writer and photographer, received Ladles for Best Food Photography and Best Food Journalist, both of which he also won in 2003.

Soft Cover Recipe Book gold winners were Taste: Baking with Flavour by New Zealand authors Dean Brettschneider and Lauraine Jacobs (under US$25) and The French Kitchen (over US$25) by Joanne Harris and Fran Warde.

Dorling Kindersley publishers left their mark on the 2005 awards by taking out four awards for Best Children s Cookbook, Best Drink Book, Best Food Guide Book, and Best Health and Nutrition Book. Chairman of the Jury, Ian Parmenter said: The breadth of work and professionalism of entries in the 2005 awards has been exceptional. Close to 1,000 items of work were judged by a panel of 49 respected international jurors."
