04/04/2005 Books about and by Pope climb charts
Since the death of Pope John Paul II on Saturday night, sales of books by him and about him have soared. Several titles have reached the top twenty on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com.
The most popular books include five written by the Pope himself, The Way to Christ, Memory and Identity, Pope John Paul: In My Own Words, Rise, Let Us Be On Our Way and Crossing the Threshold of Hope. A biography by George Wiegel, a Catholic theologian is also proving very popular.
Due to the Pope's extended illness, publishers and booksellers had time to prepare. HarperCollins, within hours of the Pope's death, announced that a new book by Weigel examining the death of the Pope and the Church he left behind would be published by the end of the year.
Other new titles recently released or being published soon include Holy Father, by Greg Tobin, and two works by the staff of the Chicago Tribune: A Global Pilgrim: The Journey of John Paul and John Paul II.
Bookshops around the world are reporting huge sales of books about and by the Pope with John Paul's, Every Child a Light, being a popular choice for children.
