04/05/2005 Philip Pullman on Carnegie shortlist
Acclaimed children's author Philip Pullman has been named as one of the authors on the Carnegie Medal shortlist for his latest book, The Scarecrow and His Servant.
The other five shortlisted books are Anne Cassidy's Looking For JJ, Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko, Frank Cottrell Boyce's Millions, Sharon Creech's Heartbeat and The Star Of Kazan by Eva Ibbotson.
Cassidy has already raised controversy for her tale of a child murderer, partly based on the real life crimes of James Bulger's two young killers and child murderer Mary Bell.
Sharon Sperling, the chair of the judges, said that this year's shortlist offers the very best in reading for children of 8 years and over.
"It illustrates not only the quality of storytelling that's available for this age group but also the depth and subtlety of these writers and their power to engage young people," she added.
The Carnegie Medal is Britain's oldest and most prestigious award for children's literature. It will be announced on 8 July and the shortlist for the Carnegie's sister award, the Kate Greenaway Medal for children's illustration, will also be announced at the ceremony.
