04/10/2005 Andrea Levy takes Best of the Best
Andrea Levy's novel Small Island has won the Orange Prize for Fiction's Best of the Best award.
The award is part of the tenth birthday celebrations of the annual female-only Orange Prize.
The chairs of the judging panels from each of the last ten years chose Levy as the overall winner.
Small Island is about a Jamaican couple immigrating to England after World War II.
Kate Mosse, the co-founder of the Orange Prize, said: "Best of the Best is a fantastic way to celebrate 10 years of exceptional women's fiction."
"It's also a great opportunity to introduce a new generation of readers to some of the outstanding novels they may have missed first time round."
Despite controversial beginnings, the £30,000 prize has become the UK's third most prestigious literary award, after the Booker and the Whitbreads.
