Kinky Friedman to run for Texas Governor
Writer and singer Richard 'Kinky' Friedman is to run independently for Governor of Texas.
Kinky Friedman has written numerous books including Elvis, Jesus & Coca Cola and Greenwich Killing Time. He is also a newspaper column writer and is well known for his music. His songs with his band, The Texas Jewboys, include 'They Ain't Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore' and 'Get Your Biscuits in the Oven, and Your Buns in My Bed'.
Among his policies are to outlaw the declawing of cats (he's an animal lover) and he has vowed to give the job of head of the Texas Rangers to singer Willie Nelson.
It is nearly 150 years since Texas last had an independent governor and Friedman needs to secure the signatures of 40,500 registered voters to ensure he's in the initial running stage.
Friedman has been a regular visitor to Ireland and has played at Whelan's on numerous occasions, where his shows are interspersed with readings from his novels and songs.
