Brando pirate novel published

Fan Tan
A novel about an adventurous pirate, co-written by legendary actor Marlon Brando, has just been published.

Fan Tan is set in the 1920s and tells the tale of an overweight pirate who saves the life of a Chinese prisoner while serving time in a prison in Hong Kong.

Publishers Weekly gave the novel a good review, saying that "enthralled readers will be swinging from the rigging along with the rest of the pirates in this rollicking high seas saga".

Brando wrote the book with the late Scottish filmmaker Donald Cammell who was best known for co-directing the cult 1970 film Performance, which starred Mick Jagger.

The book was never finished, but the film historian David Thomson edited it and wrote a final chapter.

Brando died last year at the age of 80.
