05/10/2005 London gallery buys rare Hughes portrait by Plath
The National Portrait Gallery in London has purchased an extremely rare pen-and-ink sketch of Ted Hughes by his wife Sylvia Plath.
Sketched in the first year of their marriage, the portrait shows Hughes writing at a table, wearing a dinner jacket and bow tie.
The drawing, inscribed by Hughes as "portrait of me, made by Sylvia Plath, circa 1957", was Plath's only known portrait of Hughes and it fetched £27,600 at auction on Monday.
Paul Moorhouse, curator of the gallery's 20th century collection, said: "The gallery lacked, and had been very keen to acquire, a really compelling likeness of Hughes made from life.
"This intimate portrait is a marvelous evocation of a major poet and of a fascinating literary relationship."
