08/08/2005 Rowling, Dylan and King on Quill Awards shortlist
JK Rowling, Bob Dylan and Stephen King are numbered among the authors shortlisted for the new Quill Awards in the US with the general public casting the ballots for their favourites.
There are a total of 19 categories, with five nominees in each, and winners will be determined through online public voting.
The winners will be announced at an ceremony hosted by NBC anchor Brian Williams on 11 October.
"This is the first consumer-driven awards program that acknowledges the power and importance of the written word and celebrates literacy," Jay Ireland, president of NBC Universal Television Stations said in a statement.
Other nominees include Nick Hornby, Isabel Allende, Philip Roth, Terry Pratchett, Alexander McCall Smith and recent Pulitzer Prize winner Marilynne Robinson.
The nominees were chosen by a panel of around 6,000 booksellers and librarians.
