German author Schätzing accused of plagiarism

Der Schwarm
Frank Schätzing, one of Germany's most successful writers, has been accused of lifting chunks of his latest book from a scientific website, according to the Guardian newspaper.

Der Schwarm (The Swarm) is a gripping ecological thriller that has been acclaimed as a "startling look at the uncharted depths of the ocean".

It has sold more than 700,000 copies in Germany.

Now, however, German marine biologist and journalist Thomas Orthmann has told the Guardian that Schätzing has lifted pieces of the book "word for word" from his research from scientific website www.ozeane.de.

Orthmann is demanding €15,000 in compensation from Schätzing and has also threatened to take him to court.
