Whitbread Winner Chosen to Write Peter Pan Sequel
Children's author Geraldine McCaughrean has been chosen to write the official sequel to Peter Pan.
Great Ormond Street Hospital in London was willed the copyright by J M Barrie when he died in 1937. The hospital announced their plan to comission a sequel in August 2004 to mark their centenary.
McCaughrean three-time winner of the Whitbread award for Children's fiction was chosen from a number of authors who each submitted a sample chapter and a synposis of the book. The hospital had stiuplated that the new work to be titled Captain Pan, must feature the orginial characters, Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinkerbell, the Lost Boys and of course Captain Hook.
McCaughrean expressed delight at being chosen but also said "It is an astonishing, daunting privilege to be let loose in Neverland, armed with nothing but a pen, and knowing I'm walking in Barrie's revered footsteps".
Great Ormond Street Hospital are hoping that the book will be published in early 2006.
