14/09/2005 Roberts' niece to star in Nancy Drew movie
Emma Roberts, the 14-year-old niece of Julia Roberts, is to play teenage detective Nancy Drew in a film version of the long running book series.
Roberts, the daughter of Julia Roberts' brother Eric, is currently starring in Nickelodeon TV series Unfabulous.
The film is to be called Nancy Drew: The Mystery in Hollywood Hills and the young heroine will investigate a long-unsolved crime involving the death of a film star.
The first Nancy Drew book was published in 1930 and was attributed to Carolyn Keene, a pen name used by the Stratemeyer Syndicate, which published the books.
Mildred A Wirt Benson wrote 23 of the first 30 novels. Harriet Stratemeyer, who inherited the company with her sister Edna, was responsible for 24 books.
The 175th book in the series, called Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, was published in 2003 and last year saw a re-launch under the name Nancy Drew Girl Detective.
Pamela Sue Martin, better known for her role as Fallon Carrington in Dynasty, played Drew in the short-lived late Seventies TV series The Nancy Drew Mysteries.
