14/10/2005 Nobel Prize for Literature awarded to Pinter
Celebrated writer Harold Pinter has become the first British playwright to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.
In the Swedish Academy's citation for the award, which was announced yesterday, Pinter was described as an author who "uncovers the precipice under everyday prattle and forces entry into oppression's closed rooms".
"Pinter restored theatre to its basic elements: an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue, where people are at the mercy of each other and pretence crumbles," it continued.
Pinter, who turns 75 this week, has written 30 plays, as well as poetry, prose and screen adaptations.
The Gate Theatre in Dublin is currently hosting Pinter 75, a celebration of his work. His play Betrayal opens at the Gate tonight.
