15/03/2005 Cardinal to rebut Da Vinci Code
The Vatican has appointed Cardinal Bertone to rebut what is says are lies in the bestseller The Da Vinci Code.
Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, aged 70, is the Archbishop of Genoa and a possible successor to the Pope. His job is to refute, what the Vatican claims are lies, distortions and errors in Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code.
The appointment of the Cardinal is a sure sign that the Vatican are concerned about the worldwide success of The Da Vinci Code which has sold 18 million copies and has been translated into 44 languages in the last two years. It is still among the top ten bestsellers in the US, France, Brazil and Argentina - all countries with huge Catholic populations.
The storyline of the book is that the Church has for centuries concealed the fact that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and they had a child. Descendants of whom are alive today.
