Francis Mac Manus Short Story Competition Winners Announced
The winners of the RTÉ Radio 1 Francis Mac Manus Short Story
Competition 2004 were announced yesterday.
The first prize of a Waterford Crystal trophy and a cheque for 3,000 was presented to Martin Malone, Kildare Town for his short story The Mango War. Over the past few years Martin has published three novels Us, After Kafra and The Broken Cedar.
Martin was twice nominated for a Hennessey Award and has won the John
B. Keane/Sunday Independent Fiction Award at Listowel Writer's Week in
2002 for his first novel Us.
Second prize went to Walking Toby by Geraldine Mills, Rosscahill,
Co. Galway. The third prize winner Glimpse by James
Moynihan, Kanturk, Co. Cork. James was short-listed for The Francis
Mac Manus Awards last year.
This competition for original short stories for radio commemorates the
distinguished broadcaster and novelist Francis Mac Manus (1909 - 1965)
who was a major influence in encouraging writers and developing radio
as a medium for the expression of ideas and the promotion of new
writing. This is the 19th year of the competition.
All of the winning stories will be broadcast on RTÉ Radio 1 over the coming months starting with the winning entry this coming June.
