New Potter book breaks all sales records
The sixth book in the Harry Potter series has sold more than 8.9 million copies in its first 24 hours on sale in Britain and America, becoming the fastest-selling book in history.
According to publishers Bloomsbury, just over two million copies of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince had sold within 24 hours of it going on sale after midnight on Saturday in Britain.
US publishers Scholastic said that 6.9 million books sold over the same timespan, beating all previous Potter records.
The fifth Potter book - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - sold five million copies in 24 hours in the US in 2003, while UK sales for the current book were 13% higher than first day sales of its predecessor.
"This weekend was nothing short of a triumph for publishing, bookselling and reading," Barnes & Noble chief executive Steve Riggio said.
