UK search for favourite gay novel

UK librarians and Manchester-based literature development and community publishing agency, Commonworld, have launched a search for the UK's favourite lesbian or gay novel.

Modelled on the BBC's Big Read search, the Big Gay Read will be decided by public vote and is open to any lesbian or gay-themed novel.

The organisers hope to stimulate debate and cross the sexuality divide.

The eventual winner will be named in May at Manchester's Queer Up North festival.

"Lesbian/gay literature is an important part of the lives of many people, especially in the coming out process," Commonworld development worker Cathy Bolton told The Guardian.

"The first time a woman or man finds a reflection of what they are going through can often be in a book or film. But until recently, there were very few books that could speak to them of their own experience."

The contenders include Alan Hollinghurst's Man Booker Prize-winning The Line Of Beauty, Jeanette Winterson's Oranges are not the Only Fruit and Sarah Walters' Tipping The Velvet.

Suggested Big Gay Read contenders:

  • The Long Firm by Jake Arnott
  • Around the Houses by Amanda Boulter
  • A Home at the End of the World by Michael Cunningham
  • Crocodile Soup by Julia Darling
  • Calendar Girl by Stella Duffy
  • Hallucinating Foucault by Patricia Duncker
